Anxiety and pregnancy

Bringing a new life into the world is a beautiful journey, filled with both exciting and challenging moments. However, I understand that anxiety or depression can cast a shadow on this special time, making it difficult to function and feel like a good enough parent. Remember, both women and men can experience mental health issues during pregnancy and the year after birth, and the intensity and symptoms can vary for everyone.

While it’s normal to experience some anxiety and “ups and downs” during pregnancy, some may find themselves facing more pronounced anxiety or a lower mood, which starts to impact their daily life and overall well-being. If you notice these feelings persisting for more than two weeks, it’s essential to seek support.

As a mom or dad, it’s natural to blame yourself or feel shame and guilt, which can hinder you from seeking help. But please know, you are never alone in this experience, and having perinatal anxiety or depression does not make you a “bad parent.” In fact, reaching out for help early on leads to faster recovery and reduces the impact on you, your relationship with your baby, partner, and family.

There are various treatment options available, which can be discussed with your GP or a trusted health professional. These can include counselling, social support, connecting with someone who has gone through a similar experience (peer support), engaging in exercise, and maintaining a healthy diet. Additionally, there are medications that are approved for use during pregnancy.

Countless women and men have gone through this journey and have found immense joy and fulfilment as parents. Remember, you are not alone, and you don’t have to face this alone. There is a wide network of support available to guide you through this challenging time. Together, we can help you find the happiness and peace you deserve on this incredible parenthood journey.
